The Story of St Martin

The Story of St Martin and what it means for us

St Martin of Tours was a Roman soldier known for his kindness, courage, and compassion. One cold winter’s day, Martin saw a poor beggar shivering by the roadside. Instead of walking past, he stopped, cut his warm soldier’s cloak in half, and wrapped the man in it to keep him warm. Later, Martin had a dream in which he saw Jesus wearing the same piece of cloak, showing that every act of kindness—no matter how small—matters deeply.

This simple act of generosity is why St Martin is remembered around the world as someone who lived out love without expecting anything in return.

How St Martin’s Story Inspires Our School Vision

Our vision is rooted in Jesus’ words:
“I have come that you may have life, life in all its fullness.” (John 10:10)
We believe that every child and adult should have the chance to flourish, grow, and ‘be the best they can be for themselves, each other and God’s world’.

St Martin’s story beautifully echoes this vision:

1. Love, Kindness & Mercy

St Martin’s act of sharing his cloak demonstrates love and kindness, two of our school’s core Christian values—alongside mercy, hope, faith and grace.
Just as St Martin saw someone in need and acted, we encourage children to be thoughtful, caring, and compassionate.

2. Courageous Advocacy

Our school teaches pupils to stand up for others and make a positive difference. St Martin didn’t wait for someone else to help—he showed courage and generosity.
In the same way, we nurture children to recognise need and respond, through both small daily actions and school-wide projects.

3. Seeing Every Person as Precious

Our ethos states that every child is cared for as a child of God and that strong, loving relationships are at the heart of our community. St Martin looked beyond himself and valued the dignity of another person.
We help children learn to do the same—showing empathy, respect, and understanding.

4. Flourishing Together

St Martin’s selfless act reflects our desire to help all children grow confidently, feeling safe, valued, and supported to reach their potential. Just as Martin’s kindness lifted another, we teach our children that helping others lifts everyone.

A simple message for our school community:

“Just like St Martin, we can all help others.
A small act of kindness can bring big warmth to someone’s life.”

Lantern Walk

Every year on the 11th November, we remember and celebrate St Martin as a school and as a community. Staff, parents, children and members of the community all gather together and take part in a lantern walk before Rev Jon comes and shares some thoughts on St Martin's life and how that impacts us today.
