Art

At St Martin’s, we believe that Art is a powerful and essential part of every child’s education. Our curriculum is designed to inspire creativity, nurture self‑expression, and develop a lifelong appreciation for visual arts. Through high‑quality, practical artistic experiences, children build their knowledge of materials and techniques while developing confidence in their ability to create, explore, and respond to the world around them.

We follow a carefully planned, progressive Art curriculum from Early Years to Year 6, ensuring that all pupils experience a broad and balanced artistic education. Children are taught to develop their skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles, and digital media, while also learning to evaluate and analyse creative works. Lessons are engaging, practical, and inclusive, enabling every child to make progress and succeed regardless of their starting point.

A key strength of Art at St Martin’s is our commitment to giving children opportunities to explore a wide variety of artistic tools, materials, and processes. From sketching and printmaking to clay modelling and mixed media work, pupils gain hands‑on experience that strengthens their fine‑motor skills, creativity, and understanding of artistic techniques. These experiences help children develop control, precision, and the confidence to experiment and take creative risks.

Throughout their artistic journey, pupils are encouraged to express ideas, collaborate with others, and reflect on their own work and the work of established artists, designers, and craftspeople. Studying a diverse range of artists helps children understand how art communicates ideas, celebrates culture, and shapes the world around us. Regular opportunities to display and share individual and collaborative artwork across the school promotes pride, resilience, and a sense of accomplishment.

By the end of their time at St Martin’s, our pupils will have developed strong artistic foundations, a wide range of creative experiences, and the confidence to pursue their artistic interests further. Our aim is for every child to leave with curiosity, enjoyment, and a deep appreciation for the powerful role that Art plays in their lives and in the wider world.
