Intent

At St Martin’s we want children to grow up to be happy, healthy, ‘safe and able to manage the challenges and opportunities of Modern Britain’.

Our Personal, Social and Health Education aims to provide children with the skills  and knowledge needed to ensure their wellbeing is protected, because they will be able to make informed decisions and, through assessing risks and identifying opportunities, will be able to make appropriate choices as they grow.

Our PSHE curriculum covers all the DfE requirements for Relationships Education and Health Education, statutory from September 2020.

Implementation

As a school we are adopting the resources provided by SCARF.

Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship

‘Developed by teachers and centred on a values-based and ‘Growth Mindset’ approach, SCARF’s online resources support primary schools in promoting positive behaviour, mental health, wellbeing, resilience and achievement.’

Children will have a half hour dedicated PSHE lesson a week, in addition to the many opportunities across the curriculum, and throughout the day, where PSHE values are present.

The key areas of the PSHE curriculum which repeat year on year are

  • Me and my relationships
  • Valuing difference
  • Keeping myself safe
  • Rights and Responsibilities
  • Being my Best
  • Growing and Changing

SCARF use familiar character to engage the children in day to day age appropriate dilemmas, allowing children to talk about their own experiences, their fears and their hopes.

Scenarios deal with issues ranging from feeling left out, to gender stereotyping, to ‘how to say no’. Topics covered include talking with children, age appropriately, about keeping safe in the world, raising their awareness of obvious  hazards like drugs and alcohol to hidden dangers like cyber bullying.

Within the PSHE curriculum, as well as in the science curriculum, topics of the human body and physical changes are covered.

In year 5 and 6, St Martins will introduce sex education, and parents have the right to withdraw their child from this element of PSHE – teachers will send out information when this is happening, which will include the content of the sessions so parents can make an informed choice.

Details of the long term curriculum can be found in the Learning section of the website.

SCARF also provide support with their Life Space Sessions which the school will use for delivery of sessions across the primary age range.

Impact

By the end of Primary school, pupils will feel equipped to step into their next education environment, knowing what opportunities await them, and with the skills and knowledge needed to maximise growing up safely and healthily, able to withstand peer pressure and to assert their own thoughts, feelings and needs.
