RHSE
At St Martin’s, we believe that high‑quality Relationships, Health and Sex Education (RHSE) is essential in helping every child grow into a confident, safe and responsible young person. Our curriculum is designed to support pupils in understanding themselves, building positive relationships and developing the skills they need to navigate an ever‑changing world. Through the 1 Decision programme, children learn in engaging, relatable ways, using real‑life scenarios and interactive characters that help them explore themes such as keeping safe, keeping healthy, relationships, and growing and changing.
Using 1 Decision enables us to deliver a carefully sequenced and progressive RHSE curriculum from Early Years to Year 6. Lessons are practical, inclusive and age‑appropriate, encouraging rich discussion and reflection. Pupils encounter everyday dilemmas related to feelings and emotions, being responsible, computer safety, and fire safety, giving them opportunities to practise decision‑making and problem‑solving in a safe, supportive environment. This approach helps children to recognise risk, understand consequences and build the confidence to make thoughtful, informed choices.
Our curriculum also places a strong emphasis on personal and community responsibility. Through strands such as our world and hazard awareness, pupils develop an understanding of how their actions affect others and how they can contribute positively to their environment. Children learn the importance of respect, empathy and resilience, and they are encouraged to express their views, listen to others and value different perspectives. These skills are woven into everyday school life, ensuring RHSE remains meaningful and relevant far beyond the weekly lessons.
By the time they leave St Martin’s, our pupils have developed a secure understanding of how to keep themselves safe—physically, emotionally and online—and how to maintain healthy, positive relationships. They move on with the knowledge, confidence and emotional literacy needed to manage new challenges and make responsible choices. Our aim is for every child to leave us feeling empowered, compassionate and ready to thrive in the next stage of their education and in the wider world.
